My brother, Will, appears in this advert as one of the lead guys, the one in the suit and with cappuccino foam on his top lip! I think it’s a rather good viral ad. I showed it to my boss and he immediately went and bought a .tel domain for himself! I’ve got jemima.tel too… just incase it takes off.

Oh, and if it does take off and the ad goes international my brother’s pay packet will increase significantly, so we’ve a vested interest really!

So, I saw the ‘Buying Websites for SEO’ session at SMX London last year, and it’s been on my mind ever since. Yesterday I started thinking that I great way to find old authoritative websites that are no longer is use would be to look for fads or toys that were popular in the 80’s/90’s, but which have since died a death.

The first one I thought of was Pogs! I loved these things, collected and played them to death when I was about 10. Lo and behold, www.pogs.com was registered in 1996, and is currently for sale! I offered $500 just to see what they’d say, and I was turned down and told (I quote):

“We encourage you to submit a substantially higher offer in order to open the door to negotiations for this domain.”

So, with that knock back, I decided to have another go – I found these – all along the theme of old toys that are no longer popular!

So, if you’ve got a bit of spare cash about I want to buy some old domains so you can get your hands on some of that hard earned authority – go ahead!

UPDATE: Some of them have been taken now!
